THE NAME THEORY
David Hocking
WHY SHOULDN'T I CALL MY SON CLINT ?
Is there really a connection between name and personality?
And do the monikers given to us by our parents
actually influence our lives?
stockists
Have you ever met a Bruce who was an innocent knucklehead? Have you ever heard of a Ruth who couldn’t handle herself in a fight? Why is it that Grace always seems to be so calm and mature?

According to author David Hocking, like a tiny piece of personalised music each of us has a name whose sound evokes some small and subconscious response from those we meet. This collective reaction, over the years of our existence, can gently trickle down and influence whom we become. Featuring close to 2000 names ranging from the popular to the obscure, ‘Why Shouldn’t I Call My Son Clint?’ well-and-truly answers the age-old question: ‘What is in a name?’

the name theory story
Five years ago, Hocking visited a friend for coffee and from out of the blue - and with an excited smile on her face from something that happened the night before - she asked him, “So what do you think of the name Murray?”
Continuing the joke, David ran the name through his head a few times and a picture suddenly appeared in his mind. And thus, the first name theory was born: Murray.
Libby
Bipolar. Be careful.
The joke then grew from Murray to Patrick, to Andrew, to Malcolm, and spread to hundreds of names, because it was funny - and because it often seemed to be uncannily true.
Tilly
Tilly wears glasses and she's abit scatty. She's sweet as pie until she gets catty.
Murray:
The name given to the phenomenon of dropping a bucket that is half-filled with mud. After it hits the ground most of it slops straight up and hits you in the face as you stand there. “Oh Murray!” you cry. He’s tolerated in the country, indeed he’s very funny, but city folk just don’t understand him.
Pippa
Borderline adrenaline junkie and female bullfighter.

List of male names in the first edition of the Name Theory book: "Why Shouldn't I call my Son Clint?" by author David Hocking
About the author
Born in Melbourne in 1968, David Hocking was schooled in country Victoria before attaining a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Marine Biology, from James Cook University, Townsville. After extensive work and travel overseas, he began compiling ‘Why Shouldn’t I Call My Son Clint?’ four years ago on a sea cliff near the town of Livorno in Italy. David eventually returned to Australia for a quieter life and settled in Western Australia here he still lives and spends his time writing, working at a local café in Cottesloe and dodging great white sharks. He continues to compile names and their corresponding personalities in preparation for the second edition of the book.

Why shouldn't I call my son Clint?. 2008
There was a boy...
The year is 1985, and a 16yr old David Hocking (pictured) stands in front of his year 11 English class and prepares to give a speech that each of his peers has been instructed to present. Tired of studying for a non-descript talk that bored him and that he knew would bore his class, he elects, instead, to sing a song.
That song was ‘A boy named Sue,’ by the great Johnny Cash.
Arguably the best story ever put to music, the song tells the tale of a boy who was called Sue by his father who knew he was about to leave his young family, and who also knew that his son would have to toughen-up as a result.
By song’s end, and to the tune of rapturous applause, the legend of this song became ingrained in Hocking’s mind and it never actually left him.
18 years later, in a Cottesloe kitchen, a friend randomly asked him what he thought of the name ‘Murray’ and, for a joke, and for something to do, he closed his eyes and let his mind rest upon the name, Murray.... What did it sound like? What picture did it evoke? How would the world react to it? What personality might it mould?
And then he remembered the tale of Sue, and how a girls’ name given to that young boy turned him into a juggernaut. Is this how we are really formed?, he wondered. And so he went to work.
(For the record, Hocking won the speech contest and his prize that day was a single Kit Kat.)

Hock,
this is a list of my top names,
love your work mate!
Billy perfected his grafitti tag about six months ago and this week, having been given a dare in front of the girl that he really likes, he plans to ride from Werribee to Melbourne on the top of a train. There 's a 19% chance that he'll live to tell the tale.
Charlie bawls her eyes out one minute and is the picture of perfect calm and confidence, the next. She'll often insist on driving herself home from the nightclub at four in the morning when she's so out of it she can hardly stand. The funny thing is that under all these conditions she's one of the world's great drivers. Weird, huh.
He’s either a large dopey bloke from Darwin that watches a heap of TV and puts away at least a six pack a night, or an eccentric gay hairdresser from Tasmania. Both are equally fun and dangerous on their day.
No one knows this so keep it to yourself...
in fact, come close so I can whisper it to you...
did you know that Muriel is actually a superhero?..
and her real name is...
Muriel the Underdog.
Orphelia
Ophelia is a curvaceous woman who seduces young men by telling them that she never wears any knickers.
Prue was born on a planet that exists light years from earth and she arrived here in a space ship, which is why she might seem a little odd. Nowadays, having never acclimatised to our stronger gravitational field, she is always very thin and she struggles with any kind of physical exertion. This actually provides her with great comfort for so long as she is thought of as being anorexic and frail she will always be thought of as being human, and this is all she ever wanted. (She’s not the least bit dangerous.)
Subtle. Lawrence conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and when he’s not skiing with the family in Switzerland, he enjoys being whipped by a dominatrix in a Danish dungeon.
Verity (a)
Verity has an intricate and geometrically perfect haircut, her spectacles match her handbag and she has a beautiful speaking voice.
Verity (b)
Tartare sauce: To be served with cold fish, shellfish and cold vegetables. Keep in the refridgerator until needed.
The knight in shining armour with an ill-fitting helmet that badly impedes his vision 80% of the time. He rides a big white stallion that’s not dissimilar to that ridden by Cassandra, although his task of riding anywhere quickly is made far more difficult because the horse continually tries to throw him for its personal amusement.
The affable tradie’ that parties so hard on the weekend he sometimes does himself damage.
A muscle bound twit who specializes in verbal diarrhoea and offending women.
